TechTV helped form my tech sensibilities

I didn't see that John C. Dvorak passed away last month until a couple of days ago. It was sad to see. I grew up with ZDTV and then TechTV throughout high school and early college. Dvorak, along with Leo Laporte, Sumi Das, Jim Louderback, Patrick Norton, and others represented what I saw as rational techno-optimism.

Directions

Eventually going into political science in college, I was inspired by DARPA, the National Science Foundation, NASA and other federal initiatives to go great things with technology. To me, it was a critical function that we supported as a society; today, we've largely poisoned the well. Data centers have become a political flashpoint, AI has become a battleground between new humanists and tech accelerationists. In the middle, we've lost the original position.

TechTV wasn't a high minded channel that spoke of technology as a greater good; it was a network that talked about consumer products as commodities. But the important thing to me was how technology was posed: rational techno-optimism. In other words, "here is an emerging technology; this is how it can make your life more convenient, fulfilling, or exciting."

Rational Techno-optimism

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, we were still calling family overseas and accepting huge per-minute costs just to stay connected. We would print out Mapquests to get directions to a destination and, if we missed our exit, we had to turn around and completely re-orient. I remember when I was first learning to drive. When I was invited for a job interview at a new location, I would drive there the night before just to make sure I could find it the next day. Now? I just lean on GPS.

Rational techno-optimism (RTO) might be posed as a third way between the loom breakers and the Andreessen accelerationists. I would disagree strongly and will argue that it actually represents original position. Human desires are stable and independent of technological capability; what changes is our capacity to meet them, since technology itself has to be built, scaled, and developed over time. I hold firmly to the belief that technology is neutral, whether it's a car, coding assistant, mass transit vehicle, or video game console. It's the implementation that matters; you simply can't blame the technology when humans fail our expectations. We're the responsible ones.

The rational piece means avoiding the broad brush when possible and not falling into rhetorical traps. Data centers are the new bogeymen. Practical controls are wise; bans are foolhardy. Data centers are not running the world dry; they currently use about a quarter of the water that our golf courses do, though that proportion will shift. Data centers certainly bring up energy costs, though; a proper accounting of energy use should shield residential consumers from data center impact on the energy grid.

Same for the skyrocketing costs of consumer electronics. We don't make memory here, so when AI eats the world's DRAM supply, there's no domestic valve to open. We just wait in line and pay whatever the line costs. Two of the three companies that make the world's memory aren't American, and the one that is just walked away from consumer chips to chase AI margins. When supply tightens, we don't have a lever to pull; we pay the new price.

Again, you have to dig in to actually solve this problem; blanket bans don't fix it, they just force demand down until some other demand brings it back to the surface. You just put a bandage on a wound that's on the road to infection. Bans will just result in hyperscalers building elsewhere. Same shortages and stresses on global supply, only now with revenue being offshored.

I would rather stay away from the direct policy discussion here, suffice only to say that we shouldn't fear digging in to specific issues for the purpose of solving them.

RTO as building for the future

We've believed this from the beginnings of American society. We tend to point to Kennedy and his statements about setting his sights on the Moon, but we can look over a century earlier. When the establishment of the Smithsonian was not yet a done deal, John Quincy Adams proposed an astronomical observatory to serve as a "lighthouse of the skies." Certainly, a telescope alone doesn't "put food on the table," but it expands the boundaries of our knowledge and acknowledges that we are part of a long human chain across time.

The things we can do today are due to the "frivolities" of knowledge collection of generations past. When we reach quantum advantage, it will largely be due to Bohr, Heisenberg, Schrodinger, Pauli, Einstein and others. There was no direct application toward industry in their work, but there will be soon.

Modern Days

I have never met any of the TechTV folks nor have I ever been ride-or-die enough to travel to the tapings or public events. That's just not the way I am. But when the channel was pulled into G4 and eventually completely killed off, the general public lost a vehicle for "hey, here's a cool thing that can make your life easier if you use it the right way" and "if you're handy enough, you can fix your own computer even if you can't tell RAM from a hard disk."

I remember Dvorak as the crotchety member of the Dvorak-Laporte duo. He was famous for saying the computer mouse would never go anywhere. Well, he was wrong in the short and medium term; it remains to be seen if he is right about the long arc as touch controls cross the finish line on remaining computer screens (like the MacBook). He was the progenitor of modern hot take machines, willing to be negative to get a response.

When TechTV collapsed, fans scattered in several directions. Hardware people tended to go the Laporte route to terrestrial radio and then his TWiT network. Technophiles and people who liked being tech-forward went to either Revision3 and Digg. At least, that's how I read it (probably wrongly).

I started listening to MacBreak Weekly and This Week in Tech through grad school. Many of the TechTV alumnae made their way through This Week in Tech, and I've gotten my steady dose of rational techno-optimism ever since. Laporte is very bullish on AI and that same long arc I mentioned earlier, but he balances himself with moderate-skeptics.

In my data career, I hew that way myself. My own internal dialogue weighs skepticism and optimism, weighing the tool itself and its most practical uses. But, beyond that, I am still looking for my lighthouse of the skies, pushing for the occasional speculative implementation to surprise and excite the public in my own small ways.

RTO is just as viable today as ever. But as technology has become a hot potato, the original position has split into positive messianic gobbledygook and negative nimbyism. We need a practical avenue back to it and away from whatever represents 2026’s bad faith framings. Broad brushes can’t handle detail.
